Why Ubuntu / Linux Mint other Linux flavor

Hi,
Back with a new post. This time it is via blogger app for android on my HTC Desire S.(  I do have some draft ideas  for a post on smartphones)


Disclaimer: This is NOT at all an anti Microsoft / Windows post or Linux vs Windows post. The post is just to elaborate the advantages and my experience with Linux.

Until last year I had to work compulsorily on Windows as I was developing Symbian - Qt apps. Bus as I switched to IOS app development I don't need to use windows for anything else than checking office mails.
At my home I have a Dell Inspiron with dual boot Windows/ Ubuntu. Windows which came as default OEM on the lappie is used by my wife who feels she's more comfortable with Windows. I installed Ubuntu 9.04 soon after its release which means I am using Ubuntu regularly since almost 3 years.

1. To start the comparison the first thing that comes to my mind is cost as Ubuntu is FREE
Even if most of us use pirated versions of windows, we are liable for punishment if caught. But as most of the Linux flavors are FREE you can sleep free of guilt.


2. Most Linux flavors are Open Source
This may sound a bit geeky as we don't know the benefits of using an Open Source but the biggest advantage of using an opensource S/W is that anyone can check the code and see if there are any backdoors in it.There are a lot of people out there in "The Blue Nowhere" who keep a tab on it and so we can rest assured for that.

3. More periodic Updates/Bug Fixes
Normally you will see more rather periodic updates and bugfixes for Linux kernels and OSes. Ubuntu is updated every 6 months for major release and you find lot of bug fixes every week.

4.  Lots of reliable Softwares
This is necessarily for Ubuntu, but you will definitely find more and reliable softwares on the Ubuntu One store. Now that there are paid apps available the number of apps is surely gonna boost up. Also you can rely on the authenticity of the apps rather than downloading the cracked version from "special " websites.

5. Linux is Geek Friendly
Its a know fact that linux is more geek friendly and you can meddle with a lot of things in the OS. And at any point of time there are many IRC groups out there to help you with any issue.

The list can continue on and on..but for me these points are enough to stick to my current OS-Ubuntu.

I am also aware of some unmatched advantages of windows over Linux/Ubuntu but that is solely dependent on your requirements. I don't want to play heavy games on my PC, I do have a PS2 for that.

I have also not included Mac OS in the comparison as it is completely different territory due to Hardware dependability.

1. Some parts of this blog are written on my pc as was not able to add hyperlinks via mobile app.
2. I would also like to add that after the advent of HTML5 and web apps the underlying OS doesn't matter much.

Google AdSense

Today I have integrated Ad-Sense to my blog.
Q: Is this one of the reasons I started my blog?
A: Yes, I did start a blog for  adding an ad-sense account  but NO, this is not the only reason as I mentioned in my first post. There are other reasons as well.
But as i wanted to integrate ad-sense to my blog , this time I did not acquire a public domain name on co.cc as  their terms and conditions do not allow to make any profit from a free account. May be  some time later after making some profit from ad sense ( :) ) I would surely buy a domain name.

EDIT: Just got a mail from google team stating my application for AD-Sense is rejected.. :( ..
 trying to "google" out the reasons and the solution(sic)

The first post

Hi ,
As this is my first post..let me introduce myself and disclose the reason for starting a new (the old blog lost somehow) blog.
Me being an IT Engineer in India (although I claim being a software developer) there is not much to say.
Pick any random blog by an Indian IT engineer and you will find the same rantings( definition here) everywhere.
So whats new here?
As someone has rightly said: You are unique. just like everyone else. I also want to show off my uniqueness in this Blue-Nowhere (interesting book btw).
Another reason being that this is the place where I can speak what I want to... and NO-body can stop me from doing that. Of course comments and suggestions are always welcome.. but still this is my World :)
So lets start a roller coaster ride !!

PS: I started this post approx a week or two ago.. With a plan to use blogger app on my android..but as the app does not support rich text editing on an existing post..Iwas unable to release this post..
